Eugmin

About the Projekt

Eugmin is a short game prototype created during the Culture GameJam Vienna 2024. I worked on it together with two teammates, taking on the role of the group’s designated artist. At the start of the Jam, each team had to choose from four different themes. One of them involved featuring Prince Eugene of Savoy-Carignano, and since the event took place at Belvedere 21, in collaboration with the nearby Belvedere Palace, we decided to take on this one.

As Prince Eugene was a feldmarschall in his time, we designed a game that would have him leading one of his armies through a forest. The gameplay was inspired by Nintendo’s Pikmin – hence the name Eugmin. Visually, the game took cues from stylised medieval art and woodcuts. Given the tight timeframe of the Jam, this approach worked perfectly, it allowed me to create assets quickly while being visually unique and fitting for the time. All of the game’s graphics were hand-drawn by me and later integrated into the engine by one of my teammates.

This project was a lot of fun and it allowed me to focus on just asset creation for a couple days. If we had more time to work on this project I would’ve loved to add some simple frame-by-frame animation to the characters, but for now the little swaying motions one of the programmers implemented are very cute as well.
